DEC Closes Roads on State Lands to ATVs
As of Tuesday, April 15, 2008, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) closed roads under its jurisdiction in Region 6 to all-terrain vehicle traffic (ATV) which were not properly opened to ATV traffic in accordance with section 2405(1) of the state Vehicle and Traffic Law. As a result, 40 roads on state reforestation areas in Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties will be closed to ATVs.
DEC is removing signs that previously posted these roads as open to ATV traffic. In addition, 12 roads open to ATVs on conservation-easement lands in northern Lewis County are being closed to ATVs this spring. Previously, DEC considered closing these roads as outlined in the proposed Watson's East Triangle Unit Management Plan.

Use of DEC roads in the reforestation area by cars and trucks, where allowed before, is still permitted
As allowed by DEC Policy No. 3, the recent closures do not affect ATV use on designated DEC roads by qualified people with disabilities. In addition, almost all of these roads allow use by other motor vehicles (cars and trucks), and this use has not changed.
A complete list of the roads now closed to ATVs can be seen on DEC's website in the related press release dated 4/15/08.
