Comment Period Extended on Proposed Expansion At and Around Belleayre Mountain

The deadline for written public input on the proposed development of properties around and including the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in the Catskill Mountain region has been extended until January 14, 2008. Written comments may be sent to Daniel Whitehead, NYSDEC, Division of Environmental Permits, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-1750 or e-mailed to wildacre@gw.dec.state.ny.us. Be sure to write "Scoping" in the subject line.

The proposal includes expansion of Belleayre Mountain Ski Center, and development of an additional resort

The primary issue involves a proposed private development--construction and operation of the Wildacres Resort and Highmount Spa Resort complex by Crossroads Ventures LLC--and related proposals by DEC: expansion of Belleayre Mountain Ski Center, acquisition of a 1,200-acre parcel known as Big Indian and acquisition of the former 78-acre Highmount Ski Center and a 21-acre easement on the Highmount Spa property.

The projects would be located in the towns of Shandaken (Ulster County) and Middletown (Delaware County), within the boundaries of the Catskill Park. Because of its potential environmental impact, the project is subject to an analysis required by the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR).
