New "EnviroFlash" Tool Sends You Air Quality Updates via E-Mail, Cell Phone
Free Subscription Service

Be prepared for bad air quality days with EnviroFlash
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) encourages you to take advantage of a new tool that helps you keep healthy by keeping you informed of changes in local air quality. "EnviroFlash" is a free e-mail and text messaging service that sends air quality advisory messages and other information to subscribers. It is operated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to inform the public of air quality conditions and health advisories if the Air Quality Index exceeds certain unhealthy thresholds.
In New York State, DEC meteorologists forecast the daily air quality index (AQI) for ozone and fine particulates and have publicized this using the traditional notification methods of press releases, the DEC web page, and a toll-free air quality hotline (1-800-535-1345). With EnviroFlash, these forecasts are now available to the public via e-mail or text messages shortly after AQI forecasts are made by state and local agencies, including DEC.
Personalized Messages
EnviroFlash messages are personalized according to subscriber preferences. The subscriber can choose to receive the messages daily, or only when air pollution levels are forecast to exceed certain thresholds in chosen regions of the state. The messages also include tips on what actions to take to minimize exposure to daily concentrations associated with health advisories.
To Subscribe
To subscribe, find your city at the EnviroFlash website and follow the simple directions. EPA will keep all information provided confidential and will only use it to transmit EnviroFlash messages. The e-mail messages also contain links to the DEC Air Quality Index website, where additional information can be found.
