Ian Kiraly proudly displays his record-breaking striper
Striped bass--stripers--migrate up the mid-Atlantic coast and spawn in the Hudson and Delaware rivers, drawing thousands of anglers who dream of catching a trophy. State records for some species haven't been broken in a long time, e.g., the 46 lb. 2 oz. northern pike caught back in 1940.
Three categories make up New York State's Angler Achievement Awards Program: Catch and Release, Annual Award and State Record. Anglers who enter freshwater fish that meet specific qualifying criteria receive a certificate of achievement, a custom-engraved plaque and/or an Angler Achievement Award lapel pin.Stripers are one of 45 species eligible for the State Record category.
