Tests for DEC Lifeguard Positions Ongoing
Free lifeguard tests started in January and continue until early June for anyone interested in working as a lifeguard at a DEC facility in the Adirondack and Catskill regions this coming summer. Only candidates who pass the examination will be considered for employment.

Skills Covered
The test includes an in-water demonstration of lifesaving skills and techniques, and performance of the cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) single-rescuer procedure. Candidates will be evaluated on a pass or fail basis. The exam may be taken at the DEC testing location most convenient to the applicant. Results will be forwarded to the applicant's preferred work location. To preregister for an exam, contact 518-457-2500 ext. 1.
Minimum Qualifications for a Lifeguard Position
Besides passing the lifeguard test, all DEC lifeguards must at the time of their employment:
- be at least 16 years of age;
- have at least 20/40 uncorrected vision in each eye;
- possess a valid American Red Cross (or equivalent) certification in lifeguarding, and Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer (BLS);
- submit a current certification of the applicant's physical ability to perform lifeguard duties;
- have attended one of the DEC lifeguard orientations, and
- have completed a personal interview with DEC.
