Comments Wanted for Hazardous Waste Facility Draft Siting Plan
DEC has announced the release of a draft Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Plan to help the state review proposals for new or expanded hazardous waste management facilities. Nine public hearings will be held across the state on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 to receive comments on the plan and its supporting draft generic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
When final, the plan will serve as a framework for any siting board to review proposals for new or expanded hazardous waste treatment, storage or disposal facilities (TSDFs) within the state. The plan will also help DEC and other government agencies assess the availability of sufficient hazardous TSDF capacity.
Comment on the Plan
The draft Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Plan and EIS can be found on the DEC web site. A hard copy is available at each of the nine DEC regional offices.
All persons, organizations, corporations or government agencies are invited to attend the hearings and submit written or oral statements. Reasonable time limits may be set for each speaker. Lengthy statements should be submitted in writing and summarized for oral presentation.
Written statements must be received by close of business, January 19, 2004. After that, DEC will review public statements, issue responses to comments and make necessary changes to the plan and EIS before they are made final.
