Urban Forestry Grants Announced for 2003
DEC has announced that 18 communities across the state will receive Community Greening Grants. About $60,000 in grants will be awarded to municipalities and not-for-profit organizations for community forestry projects.
These grants are made possible through the Urban and Community Forestry Program funded by the United States Forest Service. Community Greening Grants promote urban forestry through tree planting and maintaining trees in communities.
Grants provide funds for trees, soil amendments and labor. Communities may match their funding with in-kind service, donations and project-related purchases, such as additional trees. Trees funded through these grants will be planted on public property in targeted areas such as inner cities, business districts and school grounds. A second benefit of these grants is the educational component of each project, as school children and area residents will learn about tree planting, care, maintenance, and the benefits of urban trees.
