Additional Deer Management Permits Issued

Hunters who were denied Deer Management Permits (DMPs) through the lottery process earlier this year may now receive one of about 40,0000 leftover permits. Opportunities for obtaining additional DMPs in other parts of New York State also are available.

DMPs, which allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer, are issued for Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) to control deer populations in specific regions. This year, DEC received fewer DMP applications than expected by the October 1 deadline.

Selection Process for Leftover DMPs

DEC randomly selected about one-quarter of the applicants who were denied DMPs during the lottery and has begun to mail permits to them. The applicants were chosen from the following WMUs: 3A, 3C, 3G, 3H, 3J, 3K, 3P, 4A, 4C, 4F, 4G, 4H, 4K, 4M, 4O, 4P, 4S, 4T, 4W, 4Y, 5N, 5R, 6A, 6C, 6G, 6K, 6P, 6R, 7J, 7M, 7R, 7S, 8S, 8W, 8Y, 9H, 9J, 9K, 9R, 9S, 9T, 9X.

Due to the time required to process these permits, DEC and license agents are unable to respond to individual inquiries about permits. Hunters are urged to wait for their permits to arrive by mail. If they receive no mailing, then they have not been issued a permit. Issuance of leftover permits does not affect any preference points issued to hunters who were not selected for their first-choice area during the original application period.

Additional Permits in Other WMUs

In addition, DEC has reopened the DMP application process on a first-come, first-served basis for WMUs that have not reached target totals yet. Previously, no DMP applications were denied in these areas. As of November 1, applications will be accepted for DMPs in the following WMUs: 1C, 3F, 3M, 3N, 3R, 3S, 4J, 7R, 7S, 8A, 8C, 8F, 8G, 8H, 8J, 8M, 8N, 8P, 8T, 8X, 9A, 9F, 9G, 9J, 9M, 9P, 9T, 9W, 9Y.

Hunters can apply for a permit at any DEC license sale outlet. For locations of the affected WMUs, check DEC's website (see link below). DEC will issue DMPs for an individual WMU until the desired number of permits for that unit has been met. Issuance of permits for that unit then will be discontinued before the beginning of the next business day.
