DEC Honors Pollution Prevention Week Poster Contest Winners

During Pollution Prevention Week, DEC presented awards to several students who created winning posters for the 2003 Pollution Prevention Poster Contest. More than 100 people attended the presentation, which was followed by cake for all.

Pollution Prevention Week is a time when government, businesses, organizations and individuals are encouraged to reaffirm their commitment to reduce pollution and protect our environment. DEC's Pollution Prevention Unit is leading the state's effort in making business, industry and the public more aware of pollution prevention with programs and partnerships that focus on preventing pollution through source reduction. One example of DEC's many pollution prevention initiatives includes working with the State Department of Health to reduce the presence of mercury in schools.

Poster Contest

The theme of this year's poster contest was "Prevent Pollution," and more than 400 posters were submitted. In addition to the contest, DEC joined other government and community partners in presenting displays of existing programs for acid rain prevention, small business compliance assistance, and waste reduction and recycling.

"DEC congratulates all the participants in this year's contest for their creativity and commitment to pollution prevention," Commissioner Crotty said. "These young people are truly talented and important partners as we continue to work toward creating a healthier future for our state and nation by conserving energy and protecting our environment."
