Shellfish Area Closures

If you plan on going shellfishing this summer, be sure you check ahead-your chosen area might be closed.

Contaminated shellfish are a public health threat when consumed. Therefore, DEC will occasionally announce the temporary closure of areas where clams, oysters, mussels and scallops normally can be caught. Closures are a precautionary measure, and typically occur when recreational activity in the area increases the potential for bacterial contamination from sewage discharges.

Each year, DEC collects and examines thousands of water samples in shellfish growing areas. If water quality is not up to New York State and national standards, DEC designates the area as uncertified and closes the area to shellfish harvesting.

Catching Shellfish

If you plan to catch your own shellfish, first check if the area where you want to go is open to shellfish harvesting or if a shellfish closure is in effect. Also, be aware of harvest limits for each species.

A taped message advising the public of temporarily closed shellfish areas in New York State is accessible 24 hours a day at (631) 444-0480. DEC's website also gives shellfish closure information, including written descriptions and color-coded maps. More information about shellfish harvesting is available from DEC's Bureau of Marine Resources at (631) 444-0475, weekdays between 8:30 AM and 4:45 PM.
