DEC Helps Sponsor Great Hudson River Paddle

In celebration of the Hudson River, it's rich natural resources, wealth of cultural history, and its greatly improved environmental quality, the Third Annual Great Hudson River Paddle 2003 (GHRP 2003) began Thursday, July 3, in Albany, and ran until Saturday, July 12, when the paddlers reached their New York City destination.

The event was held under the auspices of the Hudson River Watertrail Association, a nonprofit corporation founded in 1992 to promote and develop a continuous water trail from New York City to the Erie Canal. DEC was one of the sponsors of GHRP 2003 and provided the public with information about the Hudson River at festivals which took place along the route.

DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources Lynette Stark joined kayakers and canoeists for the beginning of the 10-day, 146-mile tour. Starting at Albany's Corning Preserve, more than 40 paddlers set off down the river. Around 25 of them completed the entire trip.

Governor Pataki Paddles

Pataki joined the paddlers in Westchester County for a portion of the trip, departing from Horan's Landing in Sleepy Hollow and arriving at Scenic Hudson Park in Irvington.

"Paddling along the shores of the Hudson River has long been a treasured summer activity for families and outdoor enthusiasts," Pataki said. "The Great Hudson River Paddle, along with our continuing efforts to expand access to the River, have allowed participants to experience and enjoy even more of our beautiful River Valley, while also bringing attention to so many communities along this magnificent water trail."
