DEC Announces Preservation of Adirondack Acreage
DEC Commissioner Erin M. Crotty has announced the preservation of 840 acres of land in the Adirondacks to protect wildlife habitat and ensure sustainable forestry. The agreement, forged with the Adirondack Nature Conservancy (ANC) and the Northeastern Loggers Association (NELA), will enable New York State to preserve land located along the Moose River and the Adirondack Scenic Railway in the Town of Webb, Herkimer County.
"With today's announcement, New York State is once again reinforcing our reputation as a leader in the preservation of open space, protecting natural resources and promoting new recreational opportunities for the benefit of future generations," said Commissioner Crotty in announcing the agreement.
Specifics of the Agreement

Sustainable forestry will
benefit the public and the
state's economy
The agreement includes the state's purchase of a 333-acre parcel between the Adirondack Scenic Railway and the Moose River from the ANC; this parcel will be added to New York's Forest Preserve. The remaining acreage will be purchased by NELA from ANC and is subject to a conservation easement to be held by the state.
This easement will provide for sustainable forestry, encourage forestry education and interpretation, and outline public recreation rights. Opportunities will include access to the extensive network of trails on the property, such as a snowmobile trail that will help relocate the existing trail off State Route 28. The parcel also includes the Minnehaha whistlestop on the Adirondack Scenic Railway.
