Governor Announces $2 Million for Peconic and South Shore Estuaries
Local governments in Nassau and Suffolk counties will receive $2 million in Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act grants for pollution prevention measures to protect and improve aquatic habitats in the Peconic and South Shore estuaries.
While announcing these grants, which will fund 15 projects along Long Island's shore, Governor George E. Pataki explained that, "By reducing the amount of pollution entering the Peconic and South Shore estuaries, we can significantly improve water quality and protect valuable resources on Long Island."
The projects will address priorities identified in management plans developed for the estuaries, including $284,500 for four projects to improve the water quality of the Peconic Estuary and $1.7 million for 11 projects in the South Shore Estuary.

Project Selection
These Bond Act projects were selected from applications submitted by municipalities. Each project will be reviewed by independent committees comprising environmental and community experts, and will be subject to a 45-day comment period.
The Governor also announced $200,000 in state funds for projects and activities associated with the implementation of the Peconic Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP). DEC will establish priorities for use of these funds.
