Environmental Justice Policy Made Final
DEC has completed its Environmental Justice Policy, a measure aimed at promoting greater involvement of minority and low-income communities in environmental permitting and project review processes.
Announcing the new policy, DEC Commissioner Erin M. Crotty said, "This is an historic step for communities throughout New York State and one that will help ensure that all people have the opportunity to take an active role and become involved in DEC's permitting process. The policy reflects the hard work of many groups that shared a common goal."
The Environmental Justice Policy is designed to ensure fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race, color or income, with respect to the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies.
Breaks New Ground
The policy is a groundbreaking measure that reinforces New York's status as a national leader on environmental issues. Considered a "living" document, the Environmental Justice Policy will be revised regularly to incorporate new information about environmental justice and other issues encountered during implementation.
The policy lays the foundation for new legislation and enhanced regulations that incorporate environmental justice into environmental protection. It also contains a detailed implementation schedule and concrete steps to address environmental justice concerns.
