New York Recycles Poster Contest Picks Winners

New York State's public and private school children and youth organizations were recently invited to showcase their artistic talent and commitment to the environment by participating in the fourth annual "New York Recycles!" Poster Contest sponsored by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the "New York Recycles!" Steering Committee. The poster contest helps DEC achieve its goal of greater awareness and excellence in waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and buying recycled products and packaging.

Hundreds Entered

Picking the winners from the more than 850 entrees was not easy, but it's a job that DEC staff enjoy doing, so there's never a shortage of people volunteering to judge. Each winner received a framed certificate (made from recycled plastic) signed by Commissioner Sheehan and a copy of their winning poster framed. All the winners' posters are in the 2006 "New York Recycles!" Calendar.

The winners were also invited to the 16th Annual Recycling Conference sponsored by the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling in Rochester on November 16. Nine winners attended and several of them spoke about the benefits of recycling to conference delegates.
