2005 New York State Recycling Conference

The conference will address
handling a variety of waste
The Clarion Riverside Hotel in Rochester will be the site of the annual New York State Recycling Conference on November 15 and 16, 2005. The conference will open at noon on Tuesday, November 15, with vendors offering recycling products and services. Everyone is invited to attend this portion of the conference, whether registered or not.
New Course
New this year is a seven-hour Household Hazardous Waste Refresher Course being offered separately but in conjunction with the conference. Those who complete this course will be recertified for hazardous waste programs. The course is free to registered NYSAR3 members but will cost $175.00 for non-members. Participation is limited to 25 people.
Day One
The conference officially opens at 1 PM with a welcome by Sharon Fisher, President of NYSAR3, followed by Edward Doherty, Commissioner of Environmental Services. After that, Resa Dimino, Grassroots Recycling Network; Timothy Logan, New York City Zero Waste Campaign, and Dr. Nabil Nasr, Rochester Institute of Technology, will discuss zero waste.
Later in the afternoon, attendees will have the option of learning about zero-waste businesses such as Xerox, Harbec Plastics and M. Fine Lumber, or about current legislation.
The final activities of the day will begin at 6 PM, when NYSAR3 will present its Recycler of the Year Award, and everyone will celebrate America Recycles Day by enjoying hors d'oeuvres, drinks, prizes and surprises.
Day Two
Activities begin anew on Wednesday, November 16 with a choice of tours to the Frito-Lay Distribution Center; the RIT Remanufacturing Center, or Metro Waste Paper Recovery. However, those who prefer not to take a tour may remain at the conference location to talk with experts from NYSDEC, Empire State Development, the New York City Zero Waste Campaign and others.
Concurrent morning sessions will cover breakthroughs in recycling, and environmental design improvements. Two more concurrent sessions will be offered during the afternoon-one on diversion techniques and technologies, and the other about health issues regarding recycling.
Lunch will feature guest speaker Pete Grogan, Marketing Manager of Paper and Containerboard at Weyerhaeuser, along with winners of NYSDEC's America Recycles Day poster contest.
The conference will conclude at approximately 3:15 PM on Wednesday, November 16.
