Governor George E. Pataki announced $970,000 in Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grants for waterfront revitalization, preservation efforts and increased recreational opportunities in Warren, Washington and Saratoga counties. A highlight of the funding is a $250,000 grant to the Town of Bolton, in partnership with surrounding communities, to implement water quality projects in the Lake George watershed.
"The state's Environmental Protection Fund supports quality recreation and environmental stewardship in local communities around New York, providing the means to help protect and strengthen our unique outdoor resources," Governor Pataki said. "The value of protecting New York's outdoor resources and environmentally sensitive areas is clearly evident. We're proud that these new grants will help our local communities safeguard the natural heritage of the region and increase opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the many exceptional parks, waterways and trails available in the Empire State."
Town of Bolton
The Town of Bolton will receive a grant for $250,000 to implement, in partnership with the towns of Lake George, Hague, Queensbury, Ticonderoga, Fort Ann, Putnam and Dresden, the Village of Lake George, and other members of the Lake George Watershed Conference, recommended projects compiled in the regional watershed management plan. In addition, Bolton will receive a grant for development of a blueway trail linking the waterfront communities of Lake George, Lake Champlain and the Hudson River in the region. Additional grants support implementation of the first wilderness heritage corridor with the Town of Johnsburg and waterfront planning and tourism opportunities in Lake Luzerne.
Grant Administration
The four grants announced in Warren County are administered through the Department of State's Division of Coastal Resources. Matching grants are awarded to local governments for the preparation and implementation of local waterfront revitalization programs (LWRPs) and inter-municipal water body management plans, development of coastal educational programs, creation of blueway trails and urban waterfront redevelopment.
An additional four projects will receive grants administered through the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that include trail development in the Town of Saratoga, the creation of a skateboard park in Waterford, establishing a year-round recreation facility in the Village of Cambridge and improvements to a park with a new multi-use trail in the Village of Granville.
