Nearly $2 Million in EPF Grants Will Support 16 Projects in the Adirondacks and North Country

Governor Pataki greets local youth during the grants announcement of these 16 EPF grants

Governor George E. Pataki has announced Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grants totaling nearly $1.8 million for 16 waterfront revitalization, open space, recreation and preservation projects in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. A highlight of the awards is a $300,000 grant to the Village of Rouses Point for the construction of a scenic pier and other amenities on the Lake Champlain waterfront at the site of the former state dock.

"I'm proud that these grants will help improve the quality of life in the North Country by increasing access to our magnificent lakes and rivers, preserving local landmarks and enhancing recreational and tourism opportunities that support economic development in the region," said Governor Pataki.

Grant Administration

Eight of these EPF grants are administered through the Department of State's Division of Coastal Resources. The grants are awarded on a 50-50 matching basis to local governments for the preparation and implementation of local waterfront revitalization programs (LWRPs) and inter-municipal water body management plans, development of coastal educational programs, creation of blueway trails, and urban waterfront redevelopment. The other eight projects are administered through the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and include restorations to a museum and a library, adaptive reuse of an historic church for a community center, and park and trail enhancements.

Village of Rouses Point

The grant to the Village of Rouses Point will fund the creation of a 470-foot handicapped accessible pier with rest points, scenic viewing, ornamental lighting and a waterfront gazebo large enough to accommodate community events. The project will complement an improved boat ramp, restrooms and waterfront walkway nearby. The waterfront park will be an important destination on the Lake Champlain bikeways and the Lakes to Locks Scenic Byway.
