Grants Announced for Various Counties in Central and Western New York

Governor George E. Pataki has announced state Environmental Protection Fund grants for recreation, preservation and waterfront revitalization projects in numerous counties in central and western New York State. Descriptions of only a few of the projects funded by these grants are provided below.

Oswego, Onondaga and Madison Counties

Wright's Landing Marina
Wright's Landing Marina Complex,
Oswego New York

Eight grants will support various projects, including but not limited to preservation of the historic Oneida Armory in Madison County; acquisition of open space in the Town of Clay, Onondaga County; development of a handicapped-accessible trail system in the Town of DeWitt, also in Onondaga County; improvements to the waterfront in the Village of Cleveland, Oswego County, and the upgrade/redesign of the Erie Canal Museum exhibit gallery in Onondaga County.

Cayuga, Seneca and Yates Counties

Three grants will support various projects in Cayuga County, including construction of a segment of the Owasco Riverfront Kayak and Angler's Park in the City of Auburn; rehabilitation of the Osborn Library, also in Auburn, and improvements to the waterfront park in the Village of Fair Haven.

One grant will help to preserve Seneca County's original courthouse complex, and another grant will help to upgrade recreational facilities at Indian Pines Park in the Village of Penn Yan, Yates County.

Ontario, Orleans, Genesee, Monroe and Wayne Counties

Among these grants, one will enable the Town of Pembroke, Genesee County, to acquire 50 acres of land adjacent to the Pembroke Central School District in order to create the community's first town park, as well as recreational facilities. These will include new soccer and ball fields that will connect directly to outdoor sports and recreation facilities at the junior/senior high school. Additional grants will fund restoration of historic buildings, enhancement of existing parkland and development of waterfronts.

Niagara and Erie Counties

Included in these grants is one to restore the carriage house at the Darwin D. Martin House Complex in Buffalo, Erie County. Between 1903 and 1905, architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed and constructed this complex of five residential structures for Buffalo entrepreneur Darwin D. Martin and his family. Following restoration, the Martin House Complex will be opened as a public house museum. The project is a cooperative effort of the Martin House Restoration Corporation, the University at Buffalo and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Additional grant projects include one for the Town of Evans, also in Erie County, to complete Phase II of the Seaway Trail connecting the town park to Lake Erie Beach State Park, and another for the creation of a nature trail and interpretive center in the Town of Cambria, Niagara County.
