DEC Announces Exams for Volunteer Wildlife Rehabilitator and Apprentice Falconer

Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator

The examination for individuals seeking to become licensed volunteer wildlife rehabilitators has been scheduled for Friday, April 8, 2005 at 10 AM. Those interested in this free, written examination should register by March 18, 2005.

The two-hour exam, which is offered just once a year, will be held at designated locations across the state. There is no fee for the exam or license.

Though volunteer wildlife rehabilitators may specialize in a particular species, they care for many types of animals, including otters

"Wildlife rehabilitators care for injured, sick or orphaned animals, and help these animals return to the wild," Commissioner Crotty said. "Rehabilitators are dedicated volunteers who spend considerable time in developing the skills to provide expert care to distressed wildlife. They are important partners in our efforts to conserve New York State's unique animals and birds."

Qualifications and Responsibilities

Applicants must be at least 16 years old, and will need to submit two character references. A DEC regional wildlife staff member will interview prospective applicants. Individuals who have been convicted of violating the State Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) are not eligible to take this exam.

Wildlife rehabilitators must be willing to invest significant time, money, and effort to handle, house and care for animals. DEC encourages anyone interested in becoming a rehabilitator to obtain experience as an assistant to a licensed rehabilitator prior to taking the exam.

Study Materials

DEC offers a study guide and an examination manual to teach applicants about the practice of wildlife rehabilitation, including technical requirements for licensed volunteers. These materials were developed by wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, and biologists as an aid to exam preparation and are available to applicants for $15 per set.

Licensed Apprentice Falconer

The examination for individuals seeking an apprentice license to practice the sport of falconry has been scheduled for Friday, April 29, 2005 at 10 AM. Applications for this free, written examination are available from DEC. The deadline for applying to take the exam is April 8, 2005.

All applicants will be sent a letter of confirmation with a list of locations around the state where the test will be given on Friday, April 29 from 10 AM until noon. The cost of a two-year falconry license is $20.

"In the United States, recognition and acceptance of falconry as a sport is promoted through the efforts of dedicated enthusiasts," Commissioner Crotty said. "In New York State, the tradition is continued by 200 licensed falconers. Falconry is a demanding sport which requires a significant commitment in time and effort. A novice must be prepared to accept the responsibility that goes along with falconry."

Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify for DEC's Apprentice Falconry License, applicants must be at least 14 years of age, possess a valid New York State small-game hunting license, and maintain DEC-approved facilities for housing raptors. Apprentices are limited to possessing one bird, either an American kestrel falcon (also known as a "sparrow hawk") or a red-tailed hawk.

After two years as an apprentice, a falconer may qualify for a general license. Master falconers must have a minimum of seven years experience.
