Governor Pataki Takes Part in Great Hudson River Paddle 2004
A group of 30 kayakers paddled from Albany to New York City in early July, completing the Fourth Annual Great Hudson River Paddle. The paddlers were joined along the way by several state and local officials and a variety of other river enthusiasts who paddled for portions of the trip. New York State Governor George Pataki joined the group for the final leg of the trip into New York City.

The Great Hudson River Paddle is held to celebrate the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail, the improvement of public access to the Hudson River, and the diversity and heritage of the riverside communities of the Hudson River Valley. The paddle trip covers the 146-mile route over 10 days. DEC Deputy Commissioner for Natural Resources Lynette Stark spoke at the opening ceremony for the Great Paddle, and canoed the first leg of the journey.
Paddle participants camp at parks along the way and take part in four river festivals. The event is held under the auspices of the Hudson River Valley Greenway and the Hudson River Watertrail Association, Inc., a nonprofit corporation founded in 1992 to promote and develop a continuous water trail from New York City to the Erie Canal. NYSDEC helps sponsor the event each year. For more information on the Great Hudson River Paddle, go to the Hudson River Watertrail Association Web Site using the link below.
