Leashed Tracking Dog Handler License Exam Scheduled

DEC will hold a written examination for those interested in obtaining a license to use leashed tracking dogs to locate wounded or injured big game animals. The two-hour exam is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 20, 2004.

The exam will be held from 10:00 AM to noon at designated DEC regional offices. Applicants must register before August 1, 2004. For more information or to apply to take the exam, contact:

Applicants will receive a letter of confirmation and a list of exam sites. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee. In addition, there is a $50 fee for a leashed tracking dog license, valid for five years, payable at the same time as the application fee. If an applicant does not pass the exam, the $50 license fee will be refunded.

There are about 135 licensed handlers in New York State. The exam was first offered in 1990.
