Drilling Permits

DEC issued 175 drilling permits in 2012, down 31% from the previous year:

  • 154 oil
  • 7 natural gas
  • 5 stratigraphic
  • 7 brine
  • 2 storage

In 2012 DEC issued permits for wells in 6 counties; the top 3 based on total permits were Allegany (70), Cattaraugus (60), and Chautauqua (17).

  • Most of the oil well drilling permits were issued for Allegany (70), Cattaraugus (59), and Chautauqua (16) Counties.
  • Gas well drilling permits were issued for Erie (4), Chautauqua (1), Tioga (1), and Chenango (1) Counties.

Well Spuds and Completions

  • The number of wells spud (started) in 2012 was 171.
  • The total number of completions decreased 32% from 2011 to 182 in 2012.
  • Gas well completions decreased 79% from 2011 to 12 in 2012.
  • Oil well completions decreased 17% from 2011 to 138 in 2012.
  • Completions for other regulated well types in 2012 totaled 32.
