Drilling Permits

DEC issued 176 drilling permits; up 5% from 2013:

  • 149 oil
  • 2 natural gas
  • 5 monitoring
  • 1 stratigraphic
  • 17 brine
  • 1 storage
  • 1 geothermal

In 2014, DEC issued permits for wells in nine counties; the top three based on total permits were Cattaraugus (101), Allegany (30), and Wyoming (17).

  • Oil well drilling permits were issued for Cattaraugus (101), and Allegany (30), and Steuben (10), and Chautauqua (8) Counties.
  • Gas well drilling permits were issued for Chenango (1) and Chautauqua (1) Counties.

Well Spuds and Completions

  • The number of wells spud (started) in 2014 was 175.
  • The total number of completions increased 16% from 177 in 2013 to 206 in 2014.
  • Gas well completions increased by one (9%) from 11 in 2013 to 12 in 2014.
  • Oil well completions increased 16% from 129 in 2013 to 150 in 2014.
  • Completions for other regulated well types in 2014 totaled 44.
