2008 Annual Oil & Gas Production Data
The data file for information pertaining to the 2008 Annual Well Reports (zipped file 314 kb) was released on July 1, 2009, following the legislatively mandated six month period of confidentiality. The Division offers production data in a number of methods including zipped files, searchable oil and gas online database, and older summary production files. Over twenty six years of Annual Well Status and Production Data is available for free download and manipulation.
For the 2008 calendar year, total reported gas production was 50.320 billion cubic feet (bcf), a 9% decrease from 2007's posted production of 55.010 bcf. The 2008 production, which was enough to supply the natural gas needs of nearly 728,000 homes for a year, was driven by prolific wells in the Trenton-Black River formation in the Finger Lakes region. Oil production in New York increased 17% from the previous year for a total of 397,060 barrels reported by purchasers, responding to high oil prices. 816 Well owners also reported a total of 13,684 oil and gas wells. In response to the Department's e-commerce initiatives, owners electronically reported 50 percent of wells and 90 percent of gas production.
