For the 2012 calendar year, 775 well owners reported a total of 13,121 oil and gas wells. Oil production in New York increased 5.4% from the previous year for a total of 394,507 barrels reported by purchasers. Total reported gas production was 26.424 billion cubic feet (bcf), a 15% decrease from 2011's posted production of 31.1 bcf. While the 2012 production was primarily driven by wells in the Trenton-Black River formation (12.7 bcf), 2012 marks the first year since 2000 that the Trenton-Black River's share of total New York State gas production fell below 50%. Significant 2012 production was also reported for the Medina (9.0 bcf), Herkimer (1.8 bcf), and Queenston (1.7 bcf) formations.
