2016 Oil & Gas Production Data

The data file for information pertaining to the 2016 Annual Well Reports (zipped file) (425 KB) was released on July 5, 2017, following the legislatively mandated six month period of confidentiality. The Division offers production data in a number of methods including zipped files, searchable oil and gas online database, and older summary production files. Over 30 years of Annual Well Status and Production Data is available for free download.

For the 2016 calendar year, 786 well owners reported a total of 12,943 oil and gas wells. Oil production in New York decreased 22% from the previous year for a total of 222,081 barrels reported by purchasers. Total reported gas production was 13.4 billion cubic feet (bcf), a 25% decrease from 2015. Gas production was primarily driven by wells in the Medina formation (5.9 bcf). Significant 2015 production was also reported for the Trenton-Black River formation (4.2 bcf), Herkimer (1.0 bcf), and Queenston (1.3 bcf) formations.
