Brine Disposal
The Division of Mineral Resources regulates the drilling, construction, operation and plugging of brine disposal wells drilled deeper than five hundred feet below the earth's surface [Environmental Conservation Law Article 23-0305(14)]. A well permit is required for any brine disposal well deeper than 500 feet. This includes any operation to drill, deepen, plug back or convert a well.
