Project Title:Town of Jay Highway Department
Location: Valley Road, Jay, NY
Comment Period Ends: May 3, 2007
Project Description:The project consists of a greater than 25% expansion of an existing New York State Department of Environmental Conservation approved mine. The Town of Jay Highway Department proposes to expand the existing 8 acre mine to 13.7 acres. The mine has approximately 75,000 cubic yards of material in it and the duration of the life of mine is 15 years. Sand is currently and will continue to be removed at a rate of approximately 6,000 cubic yards annually for use as winter road maintenance materials used solely by the Town. Mining for winter road maintenance sand will take place during the months of May, June, July, August, September and October. The hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Approximately 500 truck loads will be moved from the mine to the Town's sand stockpile annually. The stockpile is located at the Town Highway Department approximately 0.4± miles northeast of the project site on Valley Road on tax map parcel 36.01-1-13.1. The Town generally trucks 40 truck loads per day which will require 12 to 15 days of trucking annually to stockpile the 6,000 cubic yards of material.
