Negative Declaration

Ulster County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has determined that 10 prescribed, training burns proposed for the Northern Shawangunks will not have a significant environmental impact. Each prescribed burn ranges in size between 2.3 and 9.8 acres. Nine proposed burn units are located in former agricultural fields at Mohonk Preserve and one burn unit is part of a larger chestnut oak forest at Samís Point Preserve. The action is being implemented by experienced wildland firefighters from The Nature Conservancy and Mohonk Preserve on behalf of the Shawangunk Ridge Biodiversity Partnership. This action will provide: a) information regarding fire behavior and fire effects in the Northern Shawangunks and b) valuable wildland firefighter training to members of the Shawangunk Ridge Biodiversity Partnership and local volunteers. The project is located in Ulster County at: Spring Farm Rd., Town of Marbletown; Glory Hill Rd., Town of New Paltz; Samís Point Rd., Village of Ellenville and Town of Wawarsing.
