The Town of Chateaugay has
applied for a permit to extract sand and gravel from an
existing town-owned pit, with the material to be used for projects undertaken by the
Town of Chateaugay Highway Department. The proposal involves a 12 acre total life of
mine area which is part of a 100 acre parcel owned by the town. The site will yield
approximately 14,000 cubic yards of material over the life of mine term. Upon
completion of mining, the site will be resotred to a natural state with re-establishment of
natvie grass and woody cover.

In order to meet the safety
and design standards of the Federal Aviation Administration,
the applicant proposes to improve the Runway Safety Area located off the south end of
Runway 1. The work will consist of filling and grading approximately 2.64 acres of
regulated DEC Freshwater Wetland HF-3 (Class 1) in order to establish a approximately
11.5-acre grassed area to provide the capability to support errant aircraft and responding
emergency vehicles. Mitigation for wetland impacts are proposed in the Warren County
Industrial Development Agency's wetland mitigation bank located in the same watershed,
just north and east of the airport.
