Article 15 Title 15 Long Island Well |
| Project is Located: | North Hempstead, Nassau County |
| Project Description: | |
|
Applicant proposes to install
and operate a temporary dewatering system to facilitate the
reconstruction of the Roslyn Viaduct, which carries NYS Route 25A (Northern Blvd.)
over Hempstead Harbor in Roslyn. The dewatering system will consist of four to five,
500 gallon-per-minute deepwells which will be used to relieve an artesian condition and
lower the groundwater elevation at the locations of four of the eight new concrete piers
required to support the new viaduct. Estimated daily pumpages for the system range from
588,000 gallons per day (GPD) to 2 million GPD depending on the location. As
petroleum contamination has been identified in the vicinity of the viaduct, the project also
includes a contaminant sampling and analysis protocol for the pumped groundwater with
a provision for the treatment of any contaminated water before discharge. The dewatering
system will discharge through the viaduct's newly constructed stormwater drainage
system to Hempstead Harbor.
