Project Location: Town of Rush
Project Description: The action involves a prescribed burn of approximately 125 acres of grasses and weeds. The plant community being burned is a fire climax community that requires frequent fire to survive and thrive. The burning is intended to restore a grassland community , which although existed historically, is becoming very rare in this area. The area is being managed under the Rush Oak Openings Management Plan adopted in April 1999. The burned area will become critical habitats for the grassland dependent species. This is a restoration ecology project.
This plant community is critical to wildlife habitat in this location due to the character of the land use/land cover on the surrounding lands, both State and private. There are many species of wildlife which depend on this type of cover.
The featured plant species (Little Bluestem and Indiangrass) in this management action have been known to occur historically in this region, and still persists in small patches, however, with the exclusion of fire from the ecosystem these patches have become smaller and less vigorous each year. The addition of fire to the mix is a key component in the restoration of this community to this region.
Genesee County - The Town of Batavia, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Town of Batavia Putnam and Shepard Roads Water District will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The proposed project provides for the extension of public water along portions of Putnam and Shepard Roads in the Town of Batavia. Residents in these areas are dependent upon individual groundwater supplies that historically have produced very low yields of poor quality water. Approximately 6,650 linear feet of watermain will be installed. The project is located in portions of Putnam and Shepard Roads, Town of Batavia, Genesee County, NY.
