Suffolk County - The New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has accepted a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Island Water Park at Calverton - Water Ski Club (Project #: 1-4730-01022/00001 Modification). Comments on the Draft SEIS are requested and will be accepted by the contact person listed below until February 28, 2006. The action involves the applicant proposing a modification to an existing Mined Land Reclamation permit to expand the mining activity to a depth which penetrates the regional groundwater table. This will change the project from construction of two lined man-made ponds above the water table to unlined ponds intercepting the water table, creating permanent surface water bodies at the location of the mine. The ponds are proposed to be used for water skiing. The modification will require the excavation and export of an additional 213,000 cubic yards of soil. The project location is in the vicinity of three Tiger Salamander breeding ponds, a species listed as endangered pursuant to the Threatened and Endangered Species Act. The project is located on the south side of Route 25, 3631 feet east of Wading River-Manorville Road, on the former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) site, now called the Enterprise Park in Calverton (EPCAL), Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, SCTM# 0600-135-1-p/o 7.5.
A copy of the Draft SEIS is available for review at the Region 1 office and at the Riverhead Free Library, 330 Court Street, Riverhead.
