ENB Region 8 Completed Applications 08/17/2005

The Department has received a Mined Land Reclamation from the Town of Southport for a modification of the reclamation plans for the Town’s Southport Gravel Mine.  The previous permit, issued October 6, 1999 for a 7.98 acre Life of Mine area, was based on reclamation plans that called for the site to be converted to re-vegetated open space. The Town now proposes to reclaim approximately half of the Life of Mine area by topsoil replacement, seeding, and tree planting, while continuing to use the remaining half for material stockpiling in support of Town Highway Department operations.  Due to unsuitability of the material on the site, mining operations will cease, with stockpile material to be brought to the site from other sources.  The permit proposed will authorize site reclamation only.

The project site is located on the northeast side of Sagetown Road, northwest of the Kinner Hill Road intersection, in the Town of Southport, Chemung County.

Post reclamation operations on the site will continue stockpiling operations.  The peak truck traffic is estimated by the applicant to be 30 round trips per day.

The application is available for review at the Region 8 NYSDEC office, and a copy of the application materials has been sent to the Town of Southport.

Under the supervision of the the Steuben County SWCD the applicant proposes to remove approximately 70 cubic yards of recent soil deposits along approximately 300 feet of Caton Creek  to alleviate flooding.  The work will be accomplished from the stream bank using a track mounted excavator.  In addition the applicant proposes to build a 5 foot wide by  33 foot long span foot bridge.  The project is located just west of Caton Bypass Road in the Town of Caton, Steuben County.
