The Applicant, U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District (District), is
proposing a restoration project for the Jamaica Bay Marsh Islands Ecosystem, with a goal
of restoring the low marsh habitats of Jamaica Bay that are rapidly disappearing. The
proposed project will restore up to an approximate 80 acres of inter-tidal salt marsh on
three specific areas – Elder’s Point East, Elder’s Point West and Yellow Bar Hassock.
The proposed restoration will be accomplished through a combination of fill placement,
re-contouring, and native species’ plantings. The Applicant proposes to beneficially use
sand from the deepening of the Ambrose Channel as described below.
Elder’s Point East is currently
the mitigation site under the Harbor Deepening project.
Elder’s Point West is being locally sponsored by NYCDEP and is a beneficial use of
dredge material from Ambrose Channel. Yellow Bar Hassock is being locally sponsored
by NYSDEC and is also a beneficial use of dredge material from Ambrose Channel.
A public information meeting
for all three locations will be held on August 3, 2005 from
2PM - 4PM at the Ryan Center (Building 1) located at Floyd Bennett Field.
