The applicant proposes to
create 23 tidal ponds with associated tidal channels by
dredging, and to use resultant dredged material to fill 19 existing mosquito ditches and
level mosquito breeding depressions in Areas 1 and 2 of Wertheim Wildlife Refuge.
Project's goal is to improve the overall functioning of the marsh by facilitating better
water movement and allowing fish access to mosquito breeding sites to increase
biological control of mosquitos while reducing the need for chemical control, as well as
to reduce the vigor and extent of Phragmites.
