The applicant proposes to
operate a mobile medical waste treatment unit. The MWA
mobile medical waste treatment unit uses an mechanical grinding of waste followed by
the use of a proprietary chemical mix called Cold-Ster to sterilize waste and to turn into
conventional solid waste that can be disposed of in any landfill.
As
a mobile unit using existing infrastructure, any potential impacts are limited to
those to air and those arising from odor and noise. In normal operation the unit uses
electricity provided by the site of operation. The mobile unit should not generate
significant dust.
The
sound generated by the mobile unit will be at levels in compliance with DEC
requirements.
An
in-line activated charcoal filter in the in-feed exhaust system will mitigate odors.
The final product has no odor.
The
permitted unit or units will operate at hospitals and other medical establishments.
The current approval is for operations in the following counties: Albany, Columbia,
Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Montgomery, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer,
Rockland, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. (DEC Regions 3
& 4).
