Article 23 Title 27 Mined Land Reclamation |
| Project is Located: | Erwin, Steuben County |
| Project Description: | |
|
The Department has received a Mined Land
Reclamation application from Glenn O.
Hawbaker Inc for the expansion of the mine site known as the Scudder - Indian Hills
Mine. The applicant proposes to expand a 26.36 acre sand and gravel mine to 41.13
acres within two properties totaling 145.6 acres on the south side of the Canisteo River,
between Route 15 and Indian Hills Road in the Town of Erwin.
Department staff have determined that the
entire area to be affected by the expansion
of the mine has previously been affected by mining operations, mostly associated with
the construction of Route 15.
Operation of the mine will continue surface
extraction of sand and gravel, with mining
methods and operations unchanged from the present permit. Excavation will be by
mechanical equipment, and will remove approximately 465,000 cubic yards of sand and
gravel over the 10 year operational life of the mine. Crushing and wet screening
material processing will continue on site. The truck traffic has been estimated by the
applicant to be a maximum of 10 trips per hour. Mining by drag line will occur below the
water table and will increase the size of an existing pond from 11 acres to approximately
31.2 acres. Final reclamation will include the replacement of stockpiled topsoil outside
of the pond area, and seeding with an approved mixture.
The application is available for review
at the Region 8 NYSDEC office, and a copy of the
application materials has been sent to the Town of Erwin.
