Project Description: The Town of Waverly proposes a greater than 25% expansion of a pre–1973 mine that will be approximately 5.4 acres in size. The mine will not be used commercially, it will be operated by the Town Highway Department for road maintenance purposes only. The slow rate of use (3,000 cubic yards per year) indicates a life of mine of 67± years. Days and hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5pm. Due to the fact the material will be used seasonally to maintain Town roads there will be months and weeks wherein there will be no activity at the mine. During peak road maintenance operations it is anticipated that there will be an average of 10 to 15 truck loads of material removed from the site daily. Annually, during either the summer or fall, the Town will hire an independent contractor to crush and screen material to manufacture gravel. The contractor will typically crush and screen material over a two week period and manufacture approximately 2,000 cubic yards of gravel. The crushing and screening operation occurs during the hours of operation of the mine. The 5.4 acre mining area is located on property the Town owns that consists of 179± acres. The Town of Waverly is in the process of closing an existing Town owned landfill and during the landfill closure the Town will remove approximately five thousand cubic yards of bank run gravel from this mine. Approximately 415 truck loads of gravel will be removed from the mine over a three to four week period.(approximately 20 truck trip per day) This will be a one time use and the truck traffic, noise and other minor impacts will be short term and temporary.
