Project Title: Town of Wells Lake Algonquin Dredging

Location: Lake Algonquin in the Town of Wells

Comment Period Ends: June 24, 2004

Project Description: The applicant seeks final approval to remove 143,000 cubic yards of sediment from the bottom of Lake Algonquin by dredging from eight separate locations totaling 42 acres in combined area to improve navigation and recreation. Portions of areas to be dredged are freshwater wetlands which are not to be eliminated by the project. Dredged material will be disposed of at four separate sites, of which three are former sand and gravel extractions and one is an open field. These waste disposal areas have a combined capacity of 350,000 cubic yards. The waste disposal areas will be reclaimed by re vegetation as will all disturbed upland areas. The applicant will seek a separate permit, if necessary, prior to the planned removal of an additional 142,000 cubic yards of sediment from other locations in Lake Algonquin. The applicant has prepared a Watershed Management Plan which is intended as an on-going effort to reduce the overall sediment loading into Lake Algonquin in the future. The project is planned to commence April 2005 and be completed by August 2008.
