The applicant proposes to
resume mining of sand and gravel at a previously permitted
site, north of the former, and now closed, town landfill. Under the new permit, the life of
mine area will increase from 3 acres (which includes 2.5 previously disturbed acres) to a
total of 4.9 acres. This is part of an 82 acre parcel of land owned by Valerie Helms,
located approximately 2,000 ft northeast of the intersection of Rock Road and Rt 192, in
the Town of Brighton. Mining activities will remove approximately 10,000 cubic yards
of material per year for 5 years, with a potential for a spike in the rate of extraction to
30,000 cubic yards during the Route 86 road construction project. Operations will occur
April through November, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and occasionally
on Saturdays between 7:00 am and 2:00 pm. A rock crusher will be used occasionally
inside the pit. Trucks will use the existing gravel road. Final reclamation will include
grading and seeding to establish grass cover and allow woody vegetation to grow. A
permit is also required from the Adirondack Park Agency, application # 2004-63.

The applicant proposes to
operate a new sand and gravel mine at a currently vacant farm
field site, located 2,500 feet east of State Route 86, approximately 1/4 mile north of Co.
Rt. 55 intersection. The site is part of a 100 acre parcel owned by Leavitt Farms, Inc. The
total area to be affected over the life of the mine will be 4.9 acres, and will be accessed
from Rt. 86 using an existing farm road. Operations will involve short-term, on-site
processing using portable screening or crushing equipment. Proposed hours of operation
are May through October, Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm, with occassional
Saturday mornings. Concurrent and final reclamation will consist of grading and addition
of topsoil and amendments to establish hay production. A permit is also required from
the Adirondack Park Agency, project # APA 2004-30.
