The applicant proposes to
repave and improve an approximately two mile section of
Montauk Highway (NYS Route 27A) from Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst to Route
109 in Babylon. The work includes repaving / resurfacing of the existing roadway within
the existing footprint, the repair of existing and construction of new sidewalks and
curbing, installation of new catch basins and drainage pipe and the cleaning of three
existing culverts which convey streams beneath the roadway. The project also includes
the installation of replacement culverts on new alignments at Santapogue Creek and the
east branch of Mud Creek. The Santapogue Creek work involves disturbance and loss of
approximately 600 square feet of freshwater wetlands (system BW-4) at the inlet to the
new culvert and the filling of 2380 square feet of littoral zone tidal wetland at the outlet.
The Mud Creek east branch culvert involves the disturbance of 775 square feet of
freshwater wetland system BW-10. An area of wetland creation, several areas of wetland
and buffer area plantings and the installation of a stormwater treatment structure are
proposed as mitigation for impacts.
