The applicant proposes to
stabilize approximately 500 linear feet of eroding stream
embankment by constructing a variety of bank stabilization measures and stream channel
improvements within the Esopus Creek, Class A(ts), including construction of new rip-rap on the northern
embankment, installation of vegetative mats and plantings, and new
rock vanes and weirs to reduce stream velocity and redirect stream flow. Also proposed is
the excavation and redistribution of gravel deposits within a portion of the braided stream
channel in order to convert the northern channel to flood plain, redirect flow, and realign
the southern channel. The project will impact a total of approximately 800 linear feet
within the Esopus Creek and is being undertaken to correct existing erosion, control
deposition of sediments, and to prevent further erosion of stream embankments. The
project is located on the Esopus Creek at its confluence with the Woodland Valley Creek
near the intersection of Herdman Road and Woodland Valley Road in the Town of
Shandaken, Ulster County.
