Public Meeting

Suffolk County - The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and the Cold Spring Harbor Village Improvement Society Library have entered into a cooperative agreement. The agreement calls for a Library-Environmental Center and improvements to park access and interpretation. The project is located in Cold Spring Harbor State Park east of Harbor Road (NYS Rt. 25A), north of Terrace Place, and south and west of the northern end of the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail.

Notice is hereby given that a public information meeting originally scheduled on Thursday, December 5, 2002 was postponed due to weather conditions and has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 9, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cold Spring Harbor High School Auditorium, 82 Turkey Lane, Cold Spring Harbor. The meeting will consist of an overview of the OPRHP - Library partnership, and the Library-Environmental Center and park access design.

The site will connect to the Greenbelt via a pedestrian parking area and trail connector at the Center. Restrooms for park patrons will also be provided at the Center, along with space for Parks to display interpretive materials for the Greenbelt trail, maps and other brochures, and to conduct seminars and meetings. The Library will establish a collection of books, videos and other materials related to the ecology and natural history of Long Island and serve as a Resource Library with a specialty in environmental and historic preservation studies.

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared on the proposal. Copies of the EA are available for review at the following locations: Cold Spring Harbor Library (see contact address below); Park Office, Caumsett State Park, 25 Lloyd Harbor Road, Huntington; Arboretum Center, Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay; Office of the Regional Director, LI State Park Regional Headquarters, Belmont Lake State Park, Babylon; and the OPRHP Albany office (see contact address below). Copies of the Executive Summary of the EA are available from the contact persons, and will be available at the public meeting.
