Notice of Acceptance of Final Supplemental EIS

Suffolk County - The Board of Education of the Miller Place Union Free School District, as lead agency, has accepted a Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed additions and alterations at the Miller Place High School. In 2000, the Board of Education of the Miller Place UFSD (Board) proposed a development plan consisting of the construction of a new high school building on the existing high school site, the expansion of the existing high school building and the conversion of same to a middle school, and the acquisition and development of athletic fields on a 13-acre wooded parcel on State Route 25. Each segment of the formerly proposed project were evaluated in separate Draft Environmental Impact Statements (DEIS’s) prepared by Thomas Associates. The DEIS’s were submitted to the New York State Education Department (SED) which acted as lead agency at that time. In May 2000, SED issued a Negative Declaration for both the new construction and the expansion and conversion of the existing high school building.

The Board has modified the development plan to include the following: 85,000± square feet in additions for general and science classrooms, library and media center, home and career rooms, storage rooms, and new 800-seat auditorium; development of 8± acres for athletic fields; reconstruction of the running track; expansion of existing parking area for 50± additional parking spaces for a total of 260± parking spaces; reconfiguration of classrooms to accommodate District administrative offices; renovation of classrooms and interior spaces; expansion of existing on-site sanitary system; and the installation of drywells to accommodate additional stormwater. Upon implementation of the proposed project, the existing 125,000± square foot school would be increased to 210,000± square feet (represents a 68.0 percent expansion). In addition, the District is proposing the placement of six (6) prefabricated classrooms in the area of the proposed auditorium that will be removed upon completion of the classroom addition. The Final SEIS is available for public consideration until 5:00 p.m. on October 21, 2002. Comments on the FSEIS will be accepted by the contact person. The project is located at 15 Memorial Place, Hamlet of Miller Place, Town of Brookhaven.
