| Project is Located: | Southampton, Suffolk County | |

Project Description: The applicant proposes to
dredge and enlarge a narrow inlet, or "weephole," leading from
Mecox Bay into Wheaton Pond. An old channel located to the southeast has become
shoaled in, preventing the regular exchange of tidal waters between Mecox Bay and
Wheaton Pond. The salinity of Wheaton Pond has, therefore, diminished, affecting the
tidal wetland ecology of this water body.
The dredged area would be
approximately 30 feet wide by 300 feet long and extend from
a location approximately 160 feet off the Mecox Bay side of the inlet to a location
approximately 130 feet into Wheaton Pond. The length of the inlet itself is
approximately 10 feet. This dredging would also serve to allow recreational vessels to
navigate between these two water bodies.
The inlet that would be
enlarged is on Town of Southampton property and is readily
accessible from Bay Lane, a public thoroughfare. Access to the shoaled in channel is
impeded by the presence of private property and a privately owned timber dock.
Activities associated with the proposed dredging and enlargement of the inlet would not
involve any disturbance to private property.
