Article 23 Title 27 Mined Land Reclamation |
|
| Project is Located: | Several Counties throughout the State | |
|
Project Description: Cargill, Inc. has requested
approval from the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation and the New York State Office of General Services to
expand its salt mining operation under Cayuga Lake by 5,056 acres. The material
proposed for removal lies approximately 2,000 feet below Cayuga Lake. Cargill's
operation, which removes approximately 3,300 tons per day, would remain unchanged.
No other changes in Cargill's surface operations or mining methods are proposed.
In accordance with Article
7, Section 84 of the Public Lands Law and consent granted by
the Board of Commissioners of the Land Office of the State of New York on June 20,
1938, modified and extended by the Office of General Services by permits and orders
dated April 5,1974, April 1, 1984, and January 12, 1995, Cargill and its predecessor,
Cayuga Rock Salt Company, Inc., has consent to mine rock salt from approximately 4,
425 acres of lands of the State of New York under the water of Cayuga Lake. Pursuant to
Paragraph 7 of the consent grated by OGS on January 12, 1995, Cargill proposes an
enlargement of the consent area by the inclusion of a total of 5,056 additional acres of
State owned lands to the north and south of the existing consent area. Cargill has had a
NYSDEC Mined Land Reclamation permit for its operations since the advent of the
Mined Land Reclamation Law. In addition to the inclusion of additional acreage as
described above, the proposal involves the renewal of the last mining permit issued to
Cargill. The existing mine and proposed area include lands of the State of New York
located in the Towns of Ithaca, Ulysses, and Lansing, Tompkins County and the Town of
Covert, Seneca County.
A draft permit is available
for review.
