Project Description: NOTICE OF COMPLETE APPLICATION, NOTICE OF COMPLETION OF A
DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (DEIS) , AND NOTICE OF
PUBLIC HEARING.
The Lamoka-Waneta Lakes
Association has filed Aquatic Vegetation Control and
Freshwater Wetland permit applications for the purpose of applying the aquatic herbicide
Fluridone (Sonar) to the entirety of Waneta Lake ( 781 acres ) . It is anticipated
that the
herbicide will control the nuisance exotic aquatic plant Eurasian watermilfoil
(Myriophyllum spicatum) . If the treatment of Waneta Lake meets Department /
Applicant agreed upon objectives then fluridone can be applied to the entirety of Lamoka
Lake (825 acres) to control watermilfoil. The Lakes are located between
Hammondsport and Watkins Glen and are in the Chemung River Basin. The herbicide
will be applied to Waneta Lake for a 60 day period in early Spring 2003 to acheive an
average concentration dose level of 8-10 parts per billion ( ppb). The purpose of the
project is to reduce the impairment of recreational uses associated with the Lakes and
to allow a condition whereby native plants will become established. The DEIS has been
prepared in accordance with Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law and has
been classified as a Type 1 action under the State Environmental Quality (SEQR)
regulation.
The application and DEIS
are available for review at the address listed below, as well as
at the Town of Tyrone, Town Clerks Office ( Ms Helen Baxter) at 596 County Route 23
Weston, NY. An informational meeting and legislative Public Hearing under provisions
of the Uniform Procedures regulation and SEQR to receive public comment relating to
the application and environmental impacts will begin at 6:00 PM , Thursday, July
11,2002 at the Bradford Central School, 2820 State Route 226, Bradford, NY. The
facility is available for use by those with disabilities. Comments on the application and
DEIS will be accepted at the address listed below up to July 24, 2002.
