Project Title: Control of Purple Loosestrife with introduced beetles
Location: Town of Harrietstown, Ampersand Ave. at "Glenn Pond" on the Saranac Lake High School campus
Comment Period Ends: January 24, 2002
Project Description: The applicant proposes, as part of an Eagle Scout candidate project, a regulated wetland activity involving the introduction of 500 Galerucella calmariensis. The beetle is a biological control agent to reduce the non-native aquatic invasive plant "purple loosestrife" in Glenn Pond and associated emergent marsh wetland on Saranac Central School District High School property. A DEC license to liberate the beetle has been obtained. Monitoring the beetle and loosestrife is also proposed.

Saratoga County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Coy Road Quarry by Nelson Pompa may have a significant adverse environmental impact and a Draft Environmental Impact Statement must be prepared. The applicant is proposing to begin quarrying of gniess/quartzite/diabase on 237.7 acres of a 1,800-acre parcel. An on-site processing facility (crushing and screening) will produce material that will be transported off-site. The estimated reserves to be mined at the site exceed 60,000,000 tons. The reclamation objective for the site is to create an area suitable for wildlife and open space. The anticipated life of the project exceeds 100 years. The project is located on Coy Road, Town of Greenfield.
