Lewis County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Site Preparation - Oneida-Lewis #1; Stand A-14 will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves herbicide application to understory vegetation of undesirable species in conjunction with a timber sale. Herbicides will be applied to 56 acres. A total of 93 acres are being selectively harvested, which includes the treatment area. In the treatment area existing understory vegetation is hay-scented and New York ferns, and witchhobble. Beech saplings generally less than ten feet in height occupy most areas. There is no significant amount of regeneration of more desirable tree species. Desirable hardwoods such as black cherry and hard maple will not become established in sufficient quantity after the harvest without removal of the competing beech and dense ground covers. The Herbicide Roundup will be used to treat the vegetation. The project is located in the Town of Lewis.
