Project Description: The applicant proposes to acquire Potake Pond from Ramapo Land Company and modify its current water release plan. The current release scheme was approved by DEC in water supply permit issued in 1993 and allows United Water New York (UWNY) to undertake releases from Potake and Cranberry Ponds to a maximum drawdown of 4.5 feet and 2.0 feet, respectively, for a total volume of 190 million gallons of water per year (MGY). Water currently released from Cranberry and Potake Ponds flows via Nakoma Brook into the Ramapo River, which in turn maintains the river flow at sufficient levels to continue UWNY's use of the Ramapo Valley Well Field during dry periods. The proposed water release scheme would eliminate water releases from Cranberry Pond and allow the 190 MGY to be released entirely from Potake Pond, resulting in a 7.0 foot maximum drawdown of Potake Pond. A pipeline approximately 4,100 feet long would be constructed to discharge water released from Potake Pond to Nakoma Brook, which will require a new Protection of Waters permit from DEC. |
