Article 15 Title 27 Wild, Scenic, & Recreational Rivers
Project is Located: Riverhead, Suffolk County
Project Description:

The project entails removal of mosquito fish (Gambusia spp.), golden shiners (Notemigonus crysoleucas) and other illegally-introduced species of fish from a complex of four (4) ponds, encompassing approximately 1.5 acres, utilized as a breeding location for a State-endangered species. The aforementioned fish must be removed from these ponds as these fish species depredate eggs and larvae of the State-endangered species and have already caused a precipitous decline in the endangered species population and productivity in the area. The endangered species may be extirpated from the site unless the fish are removed. Removal will be accomplished by the treatment of the pond with Rotenone, a pesticide which is toxic to fish. Rotenone will be applied by a certified pesticide applicator at a rate of 1 gallon/acre-foot at 5% active ingredient. The Rotenone will also be applied at the time of year when the endangered species is not present in the pond (sometime after early August). In order to maximize effectiveness of the 5% active ingredient in the application, Phragmites australis, also known as Common Reed, will be removed by hand as necessary from the ponds in order to facilitate complete mixing of the Rotenone.
